Trouble Shooting Email:
"Relaying Denied" Message |
This Applies to:
Email addresses that end in @fccom.net and Outlook Express
Description:
Receiving mail works, but when trying to send an email, an error message is
displayed "...Relaying denied" and the email is not sent.
Reason:
To prevent spammers from hijacking our email servers by using your account to send email
from, our servers require you to authenticate (provide a username and password) before it
will allow email to be sent.
Fix:
Users of the Family's Choice Network can switch to the following SMTP
server which will eliminate the problem
mail.safepages.com
Instructions for switching mail servers can be found here:
Outlook
Express (see steps 4 and 5)
Netscape
Messenger (see steps 3 and 4) |
If for some reason you do not want to switch your mail server, you may try
one of the solutions below.
In order to send email you must authenticate (provide username and
password) to the server first. This can be done in a number of ways:
Method 1. Receive your email before you send
If you receive your email before you send you will authenticate to the
server so when you send, you will not be required to authenticate again (for another 30
minutes). Normally Outlook Express Sends before it receives. To force it to receive first,
In Outlook Express, Click the down arrow next to the "Send/Recv" button to
reveal more options, then select Receive all (See diagram)

Method 2. Set Outlook Express to Authenticate For You
You can set Outlook Express to automatically authenticate for you, so you
don't have to receive first, just use the program as you normally would. To configure
that, in Outlook Express, goto:
TOOLS; ACCOUNTS; MAIL; (select the account for your Family's Choice email account by
default it says "mail.fccom.net"), then on the right select PROPERTIES; then on
top select SERVERS. At the bottom of the Servers tab where it says "Outgoing Mail
Server" put a check by "My server requires Authentication". (See diagram
below) click OK all the way out, and you're done. When this feature is working properly,
Outlook Express authenticates in the background for you allowing you to use the program as
you normally would. |

I Still Can't send, what else can be the problem?
Make sure you have only One(1) internet account setup. Though Outlook
claims to be able to handle multiple accounts in one identity, the reality is, all the
accounts will most likely not work together. If you need to have multiple accounts setup a new identity in
Outlook.
To verify you have only one account setup, Start Outlook and go to Tools,
Accounts, and click on the Mail Tab. In the account listing area, you should only have ONE
account defined, by default, it is labeled mail.fccom.net (See diagram, click to enlarge)

If you have more than one account, highlight the other accounts, and click remove until
only the mail.fccom.net account remains.
